PART 1
AVIATION TOPICS
EXAMINER: Welcome to the Santos Dumont English Assessment:
Please tell me your full name: ...
May I see your pilot’s license and your ID? ....
Do you have any electronic devices with you? ...
OK let's start: Part One; Aviation Topics;
In this part, you will answer some questions related to aviation
Question 1
What are the tasks performed by a pilot during cruise flight?
Question 2
How can radar traffic separation and TCAS devices reduce the chances of a mid-air collision?
Question 3
Do you believe CRM training could become obsolete in the future due to the increase of automation?
PART 2
INTERACTING AS A PILOT
EXAMINER:In this part you will interact with the aircraft control in five different situations, you may ask the controller to say again once. After listening to the controller you should interact as the pilot, all information is important, you may take notes if you wish. You are the pilot of a twin engine aircraft, your callsign is ANAC123.
SITUATION 1
EXAMINER:
Imagine you are about to initiate taxi at Philadelphia International Airport, listen to the ATC and readback:
EXAMINER:
Now imagine you have been cleared to take off, however shortly after "speed alive" callouts in the cockpit you realize there's a business jet ahead dangerously moving onto the runway. Pass a message saying that you decided for an R.T.O. (rejected takeoff) and explain why.
EXAMINER:
What did the controller say?
EXAMINER:
Thank you, this is the end of this situation let's move on
SITUATION 2
EXAMINER:
Imagine you are climbing out of San Antonio complying with a standard IFR departure procedure, listen to the controller and readback:
EXAMINER:
Now imagine you are leveled off at flight level 280 during cruise flight, however you are encountering severe turbulence conditions, therefore you decide to request a higher flight level, explain the situation to Kansas Centre and ask to climb to F/L 340.
EXAMINER:
What did the controller say?
EXAMINER:
Thank you, this is the end of this situation let's move on
SITUATION 3
EXAMINER:
Imagine you just vacated runway 2-5 Right you're about to receive taxi instructions from Berlin Ground Control, listen and readback:
EXAMINER:
Now imagine that while taxing on Victor, you are surprised by a cargo hold fire and there's dangerous goods onboard. Inform Berlin Ground Control about your situation, your position, and ask for emergency assistance to evacuate:
EXAMINER:
What did the controller say?
EXAMINER:
Thank you, this is the end of this situation let's move on
SITUATION 4
EXAMINER:
Imagine you are approaching to land at Oklahoma City Regional airport listen to the controller and read back:
EXAMINER:
Now imagine that right after you passed your message, you had a situation like this (show the picture): Explain the situation to Cleveland Approach Control and ask for priority to land and to fly at reduced speed, as a precaution to avoid further structural damages, in case of separation.
EXAMINER:
What did the controller say?
EXAMINER:
Thank you, this is the end of this situation let's move on
SITUATION 5
EXAMINER:
Imagine you are during cruise flying to Dubai, listen to United Arab Emirates Center and readback your instructions:
EXAMINER:
Now imagine that during the final approach to Dubai you found yourself unable to continue and went around due to a situation like this (show picture). Pass a message to Dubai Tower explaining what happened and ask for a holding pattern and weather forecast.
EXAMINER:
What did the controller say?
EXAMINER:
Thank you, this is the end of this situation let's move on
PART 3
UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS
EXAMINER:In this part of the test you will listen to three different communications between pilots and air traffic controllers, the recordings will be played twice, there's a five second pause before the recording is repeated. After listening to the recording, you should tell me everything the pilot and the controller said, all information is important. I will then ask you a question. At the end of part three I will ask you to compare the three situations, so feel free to take notes. Do you have any questions?
SITUATION 1
EXAMINER:
How should a pilot decide to proceed or not with the flight in case of medical situations on board? Are there any specific training or protocols to evaluate if diverting is necessary?
SITUATION 2
EXAMINER: Would you say CRM could be an important factor to prevent mistakes like this? And what are the protocols to solve this type of situation and resume the flight?
SITUATION 3
EXAMINER: What may be the cause of a hydraulic system failure? What about the consequences?
COMPARISON
EXAMINER: Thank you, please remove the headphones. Now after listening to these three situations, how would you compare them? Which one do you think is the most difficult to deal with and why? You may wanna compare them in terms of severity, possible solutions or ways of prevention.
PART 4
PICTURE DESCRIPTION & DISCUSSION
EXAMINER:In this part you will tell me what you can see in this picture and what you think is happening in it, after that I will ask you some questions, Look at the picture carefully. You may take a few moments before you start talking.
Question 1
What do you think happened before this picture was taken? You can talk from the perspective of the pilots, crew, the aircraft, or even create a short story based on this picture, use your imagination.
Question 2
Now imagine this picture has just been taken, what do you think will happen next?
Question 3
How drastic the situation must be for a pilot to command an evacuation?
Question 4
How are pilots trained to deal with emergencies such as this one?
Question 5
Now I’m going to read a statement to you and you will tell me to what extent you agree or disagree with it:
"During an evacuation procedure of an aircraft, the main concern of the pilots should be to decide which specific exits to be used by the occupants, hence they must consider the engines situation and main hull integrity, so in situations like this, initially, communication tends to be more relevant within the crew itself than with the controller."
